explaining new trends
Actually, I bet he created everyone with an appreciation for arts and crafts. They just come out in different ways (whether through "crafty" math problems or through a romp in the wild outdoors).
Anyway, I've been puzzled at "changes" I see in my life, because I'm one of those people that desperately cling to the quotidian.
I like how people can see me and comment that "I haven't changed"; whether it is the old family friend commenting on my cheeks or the high school classmate commenting on my jokes.
But I do. My interests, or where my time has been spent is changing. I realized this might be because with my added time (away from school), I've had the opportunity to explore hobbies. And with blogs from amateur experts, I can vicariously live through what they do, and I see that little bits rub off on me.
Some changes were expected.
For instance, reading copiously. I wasn't able to read in college, and now that I'm out, I'm back to reading my old favorites and picking out the new YA lit that's out there. I realized children's and YA lit are my favorite... they're timeless. I love it. Not to mention, I had to read a bit for my work, and since I love being "hip and with it" I started to read books they recommended to me!
Another change that is more interesting to me is an added interest in fashion. I guess it was inevitable, since my mom loves to dress well, and my sister is a shopping queen. I think I'm getting better though! My eye is being honed, AND the fashion these days ARE fun. Gone are the midriff baring tanks and flared sparkly jeans (Okay fine, I loved them back in the day). And now it's a throwback to the 50s classic pieces. I love the idea of sewing (key word: idea) and re-making clothes. I used to do that in high school in my attempts at individuality. And lastly, it's not necessarily fashion, but just knowing how to dress for one's body and how others should dress for theirs. I guess my mom religiously pounded that into me back in the day... heh.
So in addition to that, I like hair and makeup. I love how braids are back, and I can go back to my Barbie-days, but instead of Barbies I have friends' and my own hair. And makeup, it's just fun to see and know and experiment and critique.
And the last fun thing about fashion is that it appeals to my inner competitiveness. I like it when I try something and it shows up in a magazine later. I like it when I predict something and it comes true. I guess it's pretty easy since societal trends are dictated by the "higher-ups", but still, it's nice to be the lemming that's one foot ahead of the other lemmings.
Last trend: being in on the news. I guess it comes from listening to the radio with my different commutes... and honestly, if it were not for the gas, I would LOVE driving. In fact, i LOVED driving in high school as well. I love the radio. The country station, the oldies station (gone now), the classic big band station (there's been times where all I listen to is the boom ba ba), and of course, NPR. I love just knowing and learning random tidbits of facts and then learning about current events and history. I LOVE how when you know history, you can CONNECT THE DOTS!!!! I love that.
Something I try to do but I'm lazy about:
gardening
eating more veg.
jogging
working out on my own.
The last part is hard because I'm used to team sports and being forced to go....
something that I'm working on:
Being okay with being alone.
I think that last part has a LOT to do with the previous trends in my life.
Anyway, I guess that's all.

fairest of them all
FIVE MINUTES
FIVE MINUTES outside when the sun came out.
I took them outside to read and while the tidy little taiwanese children sat in the shade, i declared I wanted a tan, rolled up my sleeves, and stuck my smiling visage into the face of the sky.
and that day my face felt itchy and pink.
"Am i red?"
"Whoa, what happened?"
"I don't know!"
I wear my SPF15 face moisturizer everyday.
so WHY then, WHY is my face peeling and itchy?
A sunburn from five minutes in the sun?
really Earth? Taiwan? Sun? Skin?
I guess I should stay in Asia under a little sunbrella for the rest of my life. either that or risk being a marshmallow among a sea of nice tan Californians. :-/

gave up twitter
tweeting was meant to be done purposefully - if an event requires more than 1 tweet, gotta rethink!
it got to a point where i seriously considered stopping my blog.
anyway, that's over.
thanks to buzz mainly.
yesterday, an 8th grade boy in my class stared thoughtfully at my face and then said, "You know, Miss Kim, you look like Nathan." (Nathan is a high school student. I don't think we look alike at aLL)
Other kids, "What? Ehhh"
Boy: "She does - you do! You have the same eyes.. and eyebrows."
Me (Trying to keep it humorous and non-awkward): "OH poor Nathan!"
then i went home .. and told kathy and grace.
kathy came to inspect my brows.. because truth be told, i haven't taken anything to my eyebrows since i moved to Taiwan. i just grew some bangs and got some huge classes to cover them brushy monstrosities. (as i have said again and again, in Taiwan, i've let myself go to see)
kathy was surprised, "Wow you really meant it when you said you did nothing! WOW.. WOW!"
I felt utterly bushy now.. especially with kathy's confirmation of 8th grade boy's comments.
so last night i shaped it a little and got rid of a lot of wayward hairs... i guess tonight i'll pull out the tweezers..
*sigh*
:-T
it was nice while it lasted

random Monday thoughts
but then; I wonder what does HE have that's so awful about Mondays? He's just a fat cat that bullies his owner and the dog.
It's strange how I devoured Garfield comics when I was younger and I seriously remember random comics and punchlines at random times....
for instance, Coffee? Garfield. (or Jon)
a scale? Garfield
every time I eat a burger I think of the comic where Garfield weighs the burger and its 6oz; he eats it and he weighs himself and he gained 1lb. then he glares and thinks "traitor" .. hehe. not so funny i guess in writing.
Mondays? garfield for SUREEEE
My principal was understandably freaked when the academic dean informed her that I was taking a day off to take my GEDs (and not my GREs).
Today during first period...
George: Why you so weak?
Me: What? WEak? (already thinking defensively; uh you want an arm wrestle rematch buddy?)
George: Yeah, weak.
Me: What do you mean I'm weak?
George: You look different; weak today.
Me (feeling slightly mollified): Oh.. I don't know, I don't feel weak.
Hank: Eh? It's because her hair wet!
Me: Oh that's the rain.. I dropped my umbrella on my head getting my soymilk .....maybe I'm tired?
George: Oh.
Anyway I think that's as close as George ever go to "caring" for me. Very backhand and awkward. I'd like to THINK he was semi-thinking about me anyway (probably thoughts didn't get as far as "care").
By the way; I have SUCH A BIG problem with LYING! it's INSANE. absoluTELY. for example;
sometimes I say things that happened that didn't happen. (a habit i think I picked up from my dad; I mean it's so easy to remedy; instead of saying "once I saw" I could say "once I heard of a guy.." or "what if a guy..." or "wouldn't it be funny if.." I mean even if the stories I share are TRUE stories told by others; it didn't happen to mE!) .
OR i exaggerate; or add stuff that sounds true and could be true.. but just isn't.
ORRRR
I WRITE IN MY BLOG OR DIARY stuff that's just not true but what I guess I'd like to be true. my 8th/9th grade diary I was reading last night is a testimony of that.
I think every-so often, I try to remedy my lying and try to speak less and be more mindful. Every Sunday I try to remember to be soberminded.. but also, every-so often, I'm boggled at WOW how many random UNNECESSARY lies flow out of my mouth.
Doesn't that scare you? How do you know what I say and what I don't say is true?
Some things I've just gotten USED to saying.. that's just not true!
but..
other things ARE true.
I really do remind myself of the grandpa from Big Fish.
I'd get in trouble if i ever wrote a memoir; b/c it wouldn't be true.
but then you know, it's easier to reveal and confess true things when they're mixed in with tall-tale lies. then you don't know what parts are true or not. I guess this would work if I were writing a literary piece or something; it definitely doesn't make for good relationships. hah.

why i would/could write for the NY Times
I could write for the NY Times not because I'm particularly good at writing or because I have deep insight but because I can summarize, I'm snarky, AND I realized despite the loads of GREAT articles they have, they also have stupid things ... and I think I could float by on that.
I guess though, the respect wouldn't be included then.
