Graduation

I think of graduation in terms of pop culture..

And in terms of epic pop milestones, there's been quite a few in my life.

8th grade Graduation = Vitamin C, Graduation Song.
Senior year graduation = Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants's 4th book (for senior year) + the movie of the first book.
College Graduation = A blur, didn't really get caught up in pop culture.

This year:  Kristen Wiig leaves SNL, "Call me Maybe" comes out, Jason Mraz comes back to the music scene, Sing Off is Cancelled.

Frivol, Drivel, Snivel

I was looking at the list of American Idol winners after watching the Grammy's the other night.
I realized it doesn't matter if you win, you just have to make top two to have a decent chance at making it big afterwards.  Also, if you stick to country, you'll definitely have a fighting chance since that following is just so darn loyal.  This is also probably why American Idol is your best bet.  All the other music shows, you get some fame, but not that much.  Except for Leona Lewis, I really don't know anybody from any other reality TV show who managed to make it big in the music world.  Maybe Pentatonix? (Not really).

American Idol Season 1 (2002) Winner: Kelly Clarkson; Runner-Up: Justin Guarini (who? exactly).  The first of her kind, and really amazing.  She went through her ups and downs with the music industry, but has definitely learned to navigate on her own.  And how much do I love her friendship with Blake and Miranda (yes, I'm not a first name basis with them).

American Idol Season 2 (2003) Winner: Ruben Studdard; Runner-Up: Clay Aiken.  Both of them were dealt the blow of fameless infamy... not even.  I think Ruben Studdard makes gospel albums.   I have no idea where Aiken is and I'm too lazy to wiki him.  

American Idol Season 3 (2004) Winner: Fantasia Barrino; Runner-Up: Diana DeGarmo.  I remember hearing the name Fantasia thrown around.  Have no idea where these peeps are.  

American Idol Season 4 (2005) Winner: Carrie Underwood; Runner-Up: Bo Bice (who?).  WHOOO Carrie Underwood! Another country star!

American Idol Season 5 (2006) Winner: Taylor Hicks; Runner-Up: Katharine McPhee.  I thought Katharine McPhee was the winner here!  but I guess it was Taylor Hicks.. and I feel that both of them have faded.

American Idol Season 6 (2007) Winner: Jordin Sparks; Runner-Up:Blake Lewis.  Oh so THAT'S where Jordin Sparks came from!  I thought she was a Disney star - turned singer!

American Idol Season 7 (2008) Winner: David Cook; Runner-Up: David Archuleta.  Another example where the runner-up outshines the winner.  

American Idol Season 8 (2009) Winner: Kris Allen; Runner-Up: Adam Lambert.  and yet ANOTHER one where the runner-up outshines the winner.

American Idol Season 9 (2010) Winner: Lee DeWyze; Runner-Up: Crystal Bowersox.  I guess this year was a dud.  Who are these people?

American Idol Season 10 (2011) Winner: Scotty McCreery; Runner-Up: Lauren Alaina. And Both these two blow it out of the water.  They're both in country.  Coincidence?  I think not!

Honestly, I never really got hooked on American Idol, for some reason.  Maybe it got too repetitive or something.  Or, I just never connected with the judges.  Loving The  Voice.  Loved The Sing Off.  Can stand to watch random youtube clips of the X Factor for hours on end.  And to all you snobby purists:

Began watching the voice on hulu.

Dude, I always liked Blake Shelton; he has the nicest eyes and most intense gaze ever, but Adam Levine, even though his music creeps me out, is seriously the hottest guy ever.

I heard that christina aguilera goes tranny here, but she's not.. thaaat. bad. and i love her voice.

cee-lo. meh.  he seems so shady. maybe it's the shades.

actual voice-wise, there are only a few that really stick out to me ...

I used to love Bones despite its suckiness.. but last season there was no actual "solving".. just Bones "hearing" from the bones.  and it's just lame.

It was great.  Hilarious. Poignant.

What Happens in MN Stays in MN.

Yeah right.

Day 1:
Mom drove me to SF airport for 7:25am take off.
Stopped by So Cal to pick up more passengers (wtheck, airplanes are like busses now?)... and a BUNCH of USC people got on.  a lot of OLD people wearing USC gear saying "Fight on" to random other USC people they saw... they were like all old.  I was wondering if there was some.. USC reunion for Minnesotans..
Transferred in Denver, Colorado
Finally landed in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
Early bc no checked bags!
Called Go Direct  and I got to leave on an earlier shuttle.  Hooray!
Leona found me at St. Mary's Mayo Clinic.
We went home and snacked on veggie chips and made a quick dinner and waited for Dr. Han.
Who came home oh so late :( :(
It's okay!  We went for walks and talked and such!  She showed me around.. and I got to take the Junia Suite in Chez Han. :)

Day 2:
Woke up bright and semi-early (okay not really), and after starting up the oxtail soup,
hit up Daube's bakery
then onto Harmony, MN for a tour  of Amish town!  Which turned out not to be a town really, but more of scattered settlements...  Leona aptly said it reminded her of her China tours where they basically take you from store to store in hopes that you'll buy from them.  hehe.
then.. an impromptu trip to IOWA!  (the border was only 3 miles away. how could I resist?)
Now if people ask me if I've been to Iowa, i can say .... YES!
stopped by at home to check on the oxtail soup (and to bathroom)
Went to downtown Rochester and waited for James! Who gave us a quick tour of the Mayo clinic.
We went to Chester's  for my birthday dinner (aww shucks guys!)
Then came home and checked on the oxtail soup.
Maybe went on a walk?
Leo and I ended up watching Bright Star,  which I wouldn't recommend for the casual moviegoer.    (before we watched, I made her read "Bright Star" and we did a quick analysis. HAHAHHA)
well, james was with us, but 5 minutes into the movie, he conked out. and randomly twitched. hehehe.

Day 3
Woke up late and mosied on over back up to Saskeetow?  Or some random named town near the Twin Cities... to hit up
A RENAISSANCE FAIRE!
Afterwards we went to Mall of America (biggest mall in the world) and hit up TWO rides at Nickelodian (sp?) Universe.  They were FUN.  especially the second ride.. i almost peed my pants it was so good!
James treated us to starbucks and unfortunately, my first pumpkin latte of the season was not that great.
Then came home and cut up watermelon...

Day 4
Church !  at Calvary Evangelical Free Church.  
Okay, I really loved it here.  I really really did.  And afterwards we went to a welcome/history of church/what we believe session (which is sort of like a pre-lim to membership) ..
  I was glad that I got to learn more about the Evangelical Free Churches and also about this church, and I was yeah, .. seriously, it's awesome to connect with believers anywhere you go.  They have a LOT of cool community outreaches here.  The pastor who was leading this was really careful in explaining things and just so nice and gracious and his wife (second wife: both of their spouses passed away) was really outgoing and friendly and a go-getter.  Anyway, I can't wait til my church gets bigger and has a varied age group etc etc.   EXCITING/excited for Leo/James.
then cheeeled .. read books, researched/began school apps...  James came in and out and procrastinated his essay by complaining that he was hungry.
then we went to Newt's where we et some fATTY burgers.
then James gave me a tour of the richer/older neighborhood and we played in a park.  (and even in Rochester, kids go to parks to smoke le veed!)
then came home, cheeled some more, and then Leo and I watched Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.   then looked up more awkward dance clips (where we ended up watching the ending of Never Been Kissed. GAh they just don't make chick flicks like that nowadays, and the A-Ha's music video , and the BeeGees' music vids )
then ... ahem, we tried to learn the staying alive dance. .. then James came out and we tried to get him to do the final dance with us.  Hahahhahaha.  I can't divulge any more information but all I can say is Leona has an awesome husband.    (we should've done THAt dance at the wedding)
then we all three went on a walk with a frisbee.  .. and came home.
Then Leo and i took random pictures... and. .. went to bed. :(

Day 5:
woke up super early.
Leo drove me to the airport
I slept and slept until Phoenix, Arizona
Then waited there for 2 hours until i landed in SJ, CA.
where parents+joy and I went to get jjajjangmyung, jjambbong, and tangsuyook.

my ideas

once in 8th grade i read a boy's extensive 'opendiary.com' post on his "great" business proposal.. called like one-bite pizza, where basically the premise is they'd sell a pizza with the first bite gone.. and things would go like "uh oh, (if they got a whole one), here ya go!" and then take a bite.  something like that. and when it got big they'd have like pizza-cutters shaped with a bite so that they could just take out bites mass-styles.
I forget why he thought it'd be a good idea.
Honestly, well, obviously, I'm kinda sold on that idea since I still remember it (and remember who said it) a decade later.

I have some cool ideas.

Like my Nakery.  Where the little catch phrase would be "Naked and Unashamed" and where people would say things like "that's SO nake!"  and my cookies and muffins and breads would be bare and stripped and NOT full of preservatives/frosting.

Leona thought of titling an Asian-fusion restaurant "Disoriented."  I think that would be cuuuute.  I think the name would work for like a small cart, or something like that. It would be fun to run.

Another idea I had was changing my phone ring tone to the song from Inception that warns you of an impending kick. You could have it as your alarm, and it would be a trippy way to wake up.  THEN also, you know how when a sound like your alarm goes off during the day, you - for a split second - think that it's time to wake up?  Well, you'd have that effect DOUBLED since it would also be the sign that your dream is up.

Talking of Inception, my friend Sarah had a really smart idea.. (a while ago - but one that I remember now) .. perhaps the Inception was actually run by that girl on Leo Dicap's character..  it makes more sense.  there's MORE of a purpose with that.. because the whole inception for a business thing was kinda.. half-baked/not fully fleshed out.. and random.. and way too well done.  Anyway, one thing that bugs me about the ENDING is that either it's his dream OR it's the director's continuity error.  that bugs me.  it's REALLY not ambiguous .. it's one or the other.  and that bugs me. haha.  (let's talk if you have enlightened ideas).   Otherwise, I thought Inception was fun and riveting.  reminds me a LOT of Spanish philosophy/literature (they realllly love the whole zhuangzi's butterfly/dream theory)  ..  especially of Borges.

Inception's cool because there was a wide positive reception, it was trippy enough to get people thinking about it, but not enough to lose people. hehehe.

i went with the Hans to their church.  Reallllllly excited about it. hehehe.  I can't wait for our church to be bigger/older/wider.  I don't know.  got excited about the future, and got excited about going home too.

on a-whole-nother note, or maybe semi-related, fb has changed the whole meaning of "friend."  Regardless of whatever it meant before, now it means a (hopefully) amicable acquaintance who knows exactly or can access where you are, what you're doing, what you like, what you look like, what your friends look like etc etc aT ANY TIME THEY WANT!  Also, even if you want your privacy protected, OTHERS can reveal it.

i keep on watching this clip over and over again. it gets me every time. i THINK about it at random times. Her cute face, excitement, talent!

i'm GLAD she didn't go through though, because kids get messed up in the adult world of entertainment.

i'd like to think that's why Sharon said no.

anyway, looking forward to seeing her in the future. (she seems like she'll break through sooner or later; she's all up in the media apparently...according to various youtube clips i found haha)

harrypotter..

so when harry potter first came out, i was so meh about it.
i didn't even read it until book 3 came out.
then during a summer break at Cerritos at my cousins' place, I began reading books 1-3.
I was hooked.
Book 4 came out that summer and I checked it out from the library.
Then before book 5 came out, i reread books 1-4
Then before book 6 came out (my fav) i reread books 1-5
Then before book 7 came out (in COLLEGE) I reread books 1-6.

book 7 was slightly disappointing for me.

Anywhooz,
with the movies, with Movie 1, I went with my small group girls in high school and LOVED the quidditch.
For Movie 2, I watched it with my friend Ali Apple and her boyfriend and our little brothers.. we dressed up in capes and brought our own little animals (I an owl, she a cat).

but after Movie 3, I was over it.. the movies didn't compare to the books, I disliked the guy that played Harry, I was sad watching the movies and not seeing what I thought in my head.


BUT

I just saw the trailer for book 7.. WOW how time flew.

and I began literally squealing.

So, this summer I'm going to re-watch movies 1-6... (b/c I didn't even see 4-6) and perhaps reread/skim thru Books 1-7... and PREPARE!! AHAHAHAHA








...........suddenly I'm thinking of "Don't Waste Your Life."

Okay, maybe I won't go crazy with the books b/c I don't have time, but definitely, one day, I want to do a movie marathon.

watched Big Fish today... and I understand it more.

I remember watching this my junior or senior year on a Saturday night at the movies with my mom. I don't know why we went; but I remember running into friends and being okay with the fact that I was there with my mom.

I remember loving Ewan Macgregor, I remember thinking it was pretty, I remember my mom bawling, I remember the asian women and the field of daffodils... truth is, I don't remember much. I'd say "Oh, i love that movie, but I forget what it's about." I guess I loved the picture memories and the memory of my mom and I there.

I watched it again and I think I understand why my mom cried so much. In truth, the father reminds me of my grandmother and the son, my mother. I see my grandmother's larger than life stories, her grandiose statements, the fact that she is so loved by everyone, and yet somehow my mom disappoints her or she annoys my mother. i think I see that more. There's still that love; that fierce reality; but it doesn't take away the hurt i don't think.

Another thing is how i was thinking, I'd rather marry the father-type than the son-type. But then I realized the father marries a sweet sweet girl. i don't think two people who are too big for their britches who dream too big could be together. and i thought, there are only two types of people. dreamers and those who don't (but still fare just as well). and i think my grandma and i may be dreamers, while my mom isn't. BUT that can't be true.
since my mom and i can easily take the dynamics of my grandmother and her.
so nevermind.

I don't know what i'm trying to say.

All I'm saying is i love the story, the relationships, and the sweetness.

my customary top chef review

So, just watched my last episode before the final four go on to compete in Napa Valley (woot CaLiFoRnIa!)

I had mixed feelings about this year's top chef.  Basically it was a yawn; especially compared to the drama and motely crew of personalities last season (come on, i still remember their names; Jamie, Carla, Stefan, the italian guy, leah and the meathead that actually won's fling, the older lady who i LOVED but obviously my love proved fickle since i can't remember her name... the older one.. i used her skate/cauliflower puree recipe once ... man her name is on the tip of my mind.. Dinah? no.. Dionne? something a little exotic i remember.. ARIANE!)

and this season, it was boring for a few reasons.  To name the main reason, in my opinion it was way too technical.  In the past part of the appeal was that you could see why chefs went home or stayed while also nursing the secret fantasy that maybe, just maybe if you got your act together, you could also go on to star and if not win, at least give Bravo a good run for its money.  Not anymore.  The culinary chemistry and gourmet chefs are no longer an exception but the rule.  I mean we have Brian and his cocky brother (Michael! i forgot his name at first) who are both okay on the eyes, fabulous in technical skills and apparently whip it together to produce great food.  The thing is, they never mess up; if they do, it's something lame like "oops, forgot my extra garnish"... nothing quite as cataclysmic as say, a dessert not setting or all your food going bad because the refrigerator was left open (i think this was last season too. WOW season 5!  it was that wide-eyed indian girl i think).    Sure Bravo tried to milk the whole sibling rivalry thing, but whatever; if we were interested in that sort of reality show, we'd go to MTV.

Not only is there Brian and Michael, there's also Jennifer.  Perfect little Jennifer who is that girl in school that nobody likes.  The focused one, who never smiles, who says all the right things, who does all the right things, who did all the right things, and who will probably continue to do so until she smoothly slides in and wins and nods and smiles.  Lame.  Yet perfect little Jennifer did throw us a twist; when she literally CRACKED.  So glad there were so many incompetent chefs to eliminate before the judges got a chance to eliminate her.  LOVED it during this episode when Padma smiles and coolly said, "Welcome back" after the quickfire.  still, Jennifer's intense.

So not only do we have three super technically talented professionally trained chefs winning every quickfire and elimination challenge (i swear, in the beginning it was a pingpong match between the.. three), but everyone else is just... bumbling or boring.  This season seemed to say, if you have no professional training, go home - you suck!  which was pretty much the case for most of them.

Of course there were some interesting characters, and i'll get into the ones who stuck out.
Of course Mike: is cocky.. super cocky.. and annoying.. because he's so cocky.  i can totally see him as a dad.  a self-important dad of course.

then there's ooh what's that french dude.  Martel? Milan? Jacque? hahahah whatever.. He was just cute.  with zee fwench accent.  too bad he couldn't cook for beans... or beans.

and also, just most of the people were just really self-deprecating, had self esteem issues, or tried to be really gay to stand out.. lame.  Bravo should stop trying to be a platform for human-interest issues.  it's about the cooking.

I think towards the end, though, Bravo wisened up and began trying to appeal to its average majority.. through the comfortable home cooking of Kevin.. gotta love him and his beard.. and then his little bald head that makes it look like he's wearing a yarmulke.  Sort of reminds me of a dwarf!  DUDE so wanna eat his meat though..... wow.  hahaha.  poor guy; he won't win.. unless others pull booboos.  They also began focusing on Eli.  The dreamer, aspiring chef, TV watchers can all empathize with Eli. trying new things, young to the scene. whee.  Except.. peanut butter jelly .. .whatever monster concoction that was during last week's episode.. was horrific Eli ... good thing robin was still around.

Concerning Robin; was she there to appeal to the older demographic?  Because they did an awful job of making her appealing.  It was a little funny to see everyone sort of get irked by her, and i guess she is very talkative and a little too .. wannabe.  BUT again, Bravo, this is a cooking show; not MTV.. not Disney.  Come on, super petty.  I think she was kept there to be the annoying factor to add fire to a collection of dull duds.

I like Brian though.  He is just a likeable guy; especially in juxtaposition to his immature brother Michael... who probably seethes under the shadow of his perfect brother.  Brian is so ... under-spoken about his talents, he's just very methodological, kind, has a sense of morals, humble.. he's a bore.  I'm surprised he became a chef.  but he's pretty dang good at it!  and it's a fresh of breath air.. whoa there, breath of fresh air, to see a nice human being on TV.  Poor Michael.  Michael is a normal human being... and it must suck to not measure up to your older brother.  Michael - you're a great chef too.  Just stop acting spoiled or cocky.. but I guess that's applauded on Tv.. since you're sticking to your guns.  Then in that case, stick to your guns.. not that you'd care about my blog post anyway...


Final comments:  on the judges; every year I feel a  pang of symapthy for the other girl judge.. the one who's not padma.... because HONESTLY, you know people are comparing you two, and Padma's beautiful. HA that's my sick, superficial side coming out.  see i dont even know her name.  if i didnt know any of the names it would be the bald judge, the hot judge, and the not as pretty judge. hahah actually no, it would be Tom, Padma and the other one. HAHAHAHAHA

And Toby isn't so caustic this year... glad that he left his weirdo analogies for.. whatever, not the dinner table.


In closing, the final four has been decided!  You know, last season, the ending was pretty anticlimactic; and boy did i not like the winner.. and you know what's funny, nobody even sees him around anymore.  ANYWAY it was kinda sad to see Eli go.. since Eli was pretty chills... but meh, didn't care much for him or anything..   ultimately despite the length of this rambling post, i didn't care much for most of them, really.  i don't even remember half the ones who left.

the chefs in that stupid little top chef alumni reunion special they had (instead of a cooking episode that i wanted to see!) left more of an impression on me than this whole season.  well, i'll always be interested in Jennifer's food........


Also location this season was pretty sweet.  Las Vegas .. then Napa Valley? wooo!!  The money themes were pretty crazy and man, M Resort was just showering the chefs with money.



I still haven't gotten to eat at Jamie's restaurant, Absinthe.
